Statement
I am a painter, printmaker and artist book maker. My work is concerned with connections established through the use of shared space. This interest arose during my experience on a four month exchange in New York - very different from my home in a rural Hampshire village. It was fascinating to see people and our lives separate but connected, as we shared urban spaces. I was particularly interested in how the architecture - of the underground and of city cafes - both united and separated us. This interest continues, and I make regular trips to New York where I am always inspired.
My ideas have developed into a consideration of the connection through time established by shared spaces. , The architecture becomes important as a frame of the connection and sharing of space, as well as a record of the past. These thoughts have been developed in a series of works based on Sicily and Egypt. I further developed some of these thoughts in responding to a library environment, where space, purpose, and objects can be seen to be shared - and where text and words are a frame for connection.
I am currently working with a small group to run the Badger Press, an open access printmaking studio in Hampshire, which has taken quite a lot of time and energy over the past year.
